Our Top 8 Plants & Flowers for Spring Planting in the Atlanta Area

Best Spring Plants for Atlanta and Southern Landscape Design

A telltale indication Spring planting time has arrived is when you see the parking lots overflowing at Atlanta plant nurseries…. Proof that you don’t have to be a landscape design expert to create an eye-catching garden!

To lend a hand, we’ve asked our landscape architects to tell us about their favorite plants for front yard garden flowering plants and even what to plant in those backyard border garden shady spaces. Before heading out, inspect your gardens. Front yard landscapes often require full sun plants or even drought-tolerant plants; while backyard landscapes may have more trees, meaning plants for backyards may like more shade or partial sun. These plants below should get you started, but there are many more annual and perennial plants that will thrive in any Southern garden. Here we go, in no particular order:

These dependable beauties grow to 3’ in height. Each stem is full of blue flowers making this plant a fantastic choice if you are seeking to attract Hummingbirds.

#4 Annual Flowering Vinca Varieties

A true Southern standby, Vinca has proven to be a dependable grower here in the South. You’ll find some Vinca that grow upright, and some are creepers, but both are easy to care for and full of flowers. The best part is that many vinca varieties thrive in sun or shade.

#5 Daylilies

Known for their easy care and prolific blooms, daylilies are a must-have for Atlanta gardeners. These perennials add a splash of color, and with their lush green leaves, provide texture even when they finish flowering. Plant Daylilies in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil.

#6 Lavender

Bring a touch of fragrance to your garden with lavender! This flowering herb features spikes of purple flowers and silvery-green foliage and is excellent for attracting pollinators to your garden.

#7 Hostas

If you want to fill space in a shady area of your yard or garden, hostas are an excellent choice. These perennials are low-maintenance plants with large leaves in various shades of green, blue, and gold.

#8 Flax Lily

Unlike the daylily, this tropical accent plant does not produce flowers. We love the Flax Lily because it adds height and variety to any garden with its tall, soft spiky variegated white striped leaves.

We hope these choices get you started as you get your spring gardens underway.  If adding trees to your yard, see our article “Our Top 8 Trees for Georgia“.
