1. DO YOU WANT TO HIRE A “LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT” OR A POOL CONTRACTOR?

From our first blog of this series, one of the first decisions you will make is to decide if you want a landscape architect to design your pool & surrounding space, or if you only need a pool contractor.

There are very talented pool contractors out there, but if you are looking for more than just a basic pool, for example, pool design ideas that may be unique or different from what your pool contractor does, working with a landscape architect is the answer.

If you want to create a new lush landscape, add bushes for privacy, including dramatic lighting, or even well-thought-out safety lighting, and many other additions to the pool area, you would absolutely benefit from starting with a landscape design company specializing in pools.  (Obviously, Outside Landscape Group is one of the best landscape companies and pool design specialists! See our Pool Gallery for ideas and inspirations!)

2.  DO YOU WANT A GEOMETRIC SHAPE OR CUSTOM SHAPED SWIMMING POOL?

Pool shapes can include rectangle, oval, kidney-shaped, circular, curvilinear, and variations in between.  Ask yourself if you want a custom formal pool or a unique shape.  Some shapes lend themselves to a more formal feel, other shapes may be more unique, adding character and custom design into a backyard space.

The rectangle shape is a common choice that can be elevated to look sleek and contemporary.  You may want something more resort-like, which may be a curvilinear shape to incorporate straight angles for lap swimming along with curved edges to add interest; or a flowing design with curves and waterfalls for a nature-inspired pool.

Whichever pool shape you choose, be sure to understand the maintenance required for your design.

If you are interested in a custom pool, find a landscape company that specializes in pool design.  For example, when you choose Outside Landscape Group, we can show you examples of different pool shapes from our huge selection of completed projects which may inspire a completely new design for your pool!

3. WHAT TYPE OF POOL PAVING MATERIAL WILL YOU USE AROUND THE POOL AREA?

One thing you’ll want to decide is the type of paving material to use in the area surrounding the pool.   If you have children, or really just about anyone, you may want to use a slip-resistant paving material for the areas that people will walk on with wet feet.

Another consideration is the pool deck temperature and the feel while stepping. The various colors and textures of material, as it relates to sun and heat, make a big difference. Pool areas are a barefoot environment and a pool deck material selection is key to enjoying the outdoor experience.    Be sure your work with someone experienced with decking material to help you make the best choices for your family, pool, and your wallet!

4. SAFETY AND POOL FENCING?

This is something important to keep in mind. A lot of yards have some form of fencing around the perimeter, but the type and location are key.

Pool fencing is a great safety feature and most often varies with requirements based on your city location.

5. WILL CUSTOM CARPENTRY PIECES ENHANCE YOUR POOL & OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE?

Custom carpentry for your outdoor space can surely provide that wow factor people love.  A beautiful, custom-built pergola, for instance, will add much-wanted shade as well as lend character to your swimming pool landscaping ideas.

You may want a changing area, a new deck for cookouts, or a small outdoor shower – whatever it is, you will need an experienced carpenter to build the element.   Of course, OLG can help you here.  Check out a few of our projects in our landscape photo gallery!
